Sacramento County will ‘follow the state’s lead’ in lifting indoor mask mandate, Yolo County to ‘evaluate situation’ | On the heels of California announcing on Monday that it will lift its statewide mask requirement for vaccinated individuals later this month, Sacramento County confirmed that it is following suit. “We are planning to follow the state’s lead on lifting the mask mandate,” a spokesperson with Sacramento County wrote in a response to KCRA 3. California votes to require paid sick leave for virus cases | The California Legislature passed a bill Monday requiring many companies to give workers up to two weeks of paid time off if they get sick from the coronavirus. Read more here.
Juror in Scott Peterson murder trial may receive immunity | Scott Peterson, the Modesto man convicted of killing his wife and unborn son, is seeking a new trial as investigations over alleged juror misconduct continue. Read more here.
Sacramento’s Oak Park Brewing Co. teams up with Black-owned breweries to spotlight unsung heroes of Black history | Sacramento’s Oak Park Brewing Co. and three other Black-owned breweries in California have teamed up for a special beer collaboration during Black History Month. The breweries released a mixed Hazy IPA four-pack with can label art that highlights four “unsung heroes of Black history” who were changemakers in their industries. Read more here.
House expected to vote on stopgap government funding bill to avert shutdown | Funding is currently set to expire on Feb. 18, but the measure the House is set to take up would extend funding through March 11. Read more here.
Biden threatens: No gas pipeline if Russia invades Ukraine | In a flurry of diplomacy across two continents, President Joe Biden met with Germany’s new leader Monday and vowed the crucial Nord Stream 2 Russia-to-Germany gas pipeline will be blocked if Russia further invades Ukraine. Russia’s Vladimir Putin retorted that the U.S. and its allies are the only ones talking invasion. Read more here.
Governors in 4 states plan for end to school mask mandates | The governors of four states announced plans Monday to lift statewide mask requirements in schools by the end of February or March, citing the rapid easing of COVID-19′s omicron surge. The decisions in Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey and Oregon were announced as state and local governments grapple with which virus restrictions to jettison and which ones to keep in place. Parents charged in Michigan school shooting face key hearing | The parents of a teenager who is accused of killing four students at a Michigan school face a key hearing to determine if they will face trial. Attorneys for James and Jennifer Crumbley have asked a judge to consider a postponement so they can further prepare. But there was no decision ahead of the hearing Tuesday. Read more here.

Jessie Diggins makes U.S. Olympic history, wins bronze in individual sprint free | Embracing the suffering, Jessie Diggins dug deep to secure bronze for the United States. The win secured the first ever women’s individual cross-country sprint medal for the United States at the Winter Olympics and just the second overall (Bill Koch – silver in Men’s 30km in 1976).
Meteorologist Melanie Hunter says Northern California is waking up to a mainly clear start with light to calm wind up and down the Valley, helping to make for a chilly start. For the morning, temperatures in the Valley are in the 30s, and in the teens for Truckee and South Lake Tahoe. Similar to Monday, Tuesday’s temperatures are starting off cool and later rebounding to the 60s by noon with highs in the low 70s.
