A pilot was hospitalized after the plane they were in crashed on top of an Auburn home, according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials said the crash happened at a home on Miracle Drive around 3:15 p.m.
The pilot was the only person on board, and no other injuries were reported on the ground, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
“We actually don’t know the condition of the pilot,” said Angela Musallam, Placer County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson.
But Placer County officials say the homeowners were not hurt. They are calling that nothing short of a miracle – and the home just happens to be on a street named “Miracle Drive.”
“They are so fortunate in this case that the plane did not crash through the home and injure them, so we’re saying that they’re very lucky,” Musallam said.
The Placer County Sheriff’s Office says they initially got a call about a “suspicious circumstance.” According to deputies, it turns out the pilot clipped some power lines and trees before crash-landing onto the roof. The home is only a few miles away from the Auburn Municipal Airport, but the pilot’s destination is still unclear.
“We do not know where this plane was heading, where this plane was coming from,” Musallam said.
The FAA told KCRA 3 that the plane was a single-engine Cessna 172. KCRA 3 also spoke to a man who says he has flown that same plane before. He did not want to go on camera or be identified, but he claims he never experienced any issues with it. Now, people are just praying for the pilot.
“I hope he’s okay, I hope everybody’s OK, and I hope that he lives to fly another day,” local Brian Bookout said.
The FAA and NTSB are now leading the investigation.
