The cold regime is in place and will not be going anywhere soon.  The persistent chill will maintain a presence through the weekend as temps will dip to or near freezing regionwide overnight both Thursday into Friday and Friday into Saturday. The growing season should come to a close by the weekend for almost all of the region, currently all but our Southside counties have yet to get a hard freeze this season, meaning no more freeze or frost products will be issued.
On Friday morning the temps will be cold enough to produce the season’s first hard freeze for Patrick, Henry, Pittsylvania, and Halifax counties. A Freeze Watch is in effect for those counties.
The only variable over the next few days will be the chance for some snow on the Grayson County Highlands of the Mountain Empire and a little light rain for Southside.
A fast-moving disturbance will slide through North Carolina and may provide some light rain and snow to the area. The snow will not have much of a chance to accumulate since the ground is so warm, but there may be a few slick roads or even some icy bridges and overpasses, but nothing away from our southern counties of Grayson, Carroll, Floyd, and Patrick.  Similar to the event of Tuesday morning, if you sleep in you may not see much snow. Light rain is also included in this feature and should be mainly confined to our southern counties. Look for the rain to end before the afternoon and be generally on the light side.
Once the threat of wet weather ends, our attention turns to the cold air.  This little taste of winter is going to be with us through the weekend with lows near freezing and highs only in the 40s and 50s.  Plenty of sunshine will allow for the region to feel warm, but in actuality, it will be about 10 degrees cooler than usual for early November.
The good news for those who are not looking for an early winter is that the temps will rebound back to the 70s by the middle of next week. Sunday may see a few more clouds than any other day after Thursday as a storm complex will push up the coast. There may be some clouds drifting in from the east, but the chance for rain is not in the forecast, just a deck of high-level cloudiness Sunday.
Remember to change out the batteries in your smoke detectors and CO (carbon monoxide) monitors when you push back your clocks this weekend.
Stay Safe,
