Rapper Akon plans to build a new “cypto city” in Senegal – SmartCitiesWorld

Rapper Akon says he plans to build a brand new city in Senegal, with its own cryptocurrency, AKoin.
Akon is quoted as saying his vision for the city is as a “real-life Wakanda” – a fictional country created by Marvel comics and home to superhero Black Panther.

The Akon Crypto City would be: “The first 100% crypto-based city with AKoin at the centre of transactional life,” the project’s website says.

Akon’s plan is to build his Crypto City on 2,000 acres of land gifted to him by the President of Senegal. It’s within five minutes of the new international airport, close to the coast and a short drive from Dakar, the capital city of Senegal, Akon’s homeland, the site says.
A blank canvas

The site adds: “Akon Crypto City blends leading smart city planning designs with a blank canvas for cryptonising our daily human and business exchanges, with the goal of inventing a radical new way of existence.”

Through the AKoin ecosystem consumers will be able to buy, hold, and spend cryptocurrency via their smartphones through a suite of blockchain-powered apps.
Akon is quoted as saying he believes cryptocurrency could be “the saviour of Africa”.
