John A. Szakalski died on February 4.
John A. Szakalski, 72, of Auburn, died unexpectedly at home on Thursday.
He was born in Auburn and was a graduate of Mount Carmel High School.
Following graduation, Szakalski enlisted in the US Navy, where he was an electrician assigned to the USS L.Y. Spear out of Norfolk, VA. He was part of the inaugural crew, according to his obituary.
When he completed his enlistment, he returned to Auburn. For 39 years, he worked as a foreman for Crucible Steel.
Szakalski was a golfer and enjoyed taking trips to play at different golf courses.
His obituary said, “He was quick with a story, made people laugh and always enjoyed a cocktail with friends.”
Calling hours will take place from 4 p.m to 6 p.m. on Wednesday at White Chapel Funeral Home, 197 South St., Auburn.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on February 10 at St. Francis of Assisi, 301 Clark St., Auburn, followed by a committal service at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, 6020 Lake Ave., Auburn.
